As expected, Firefox 5.0 is now available in final version for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. As we indicated during the beta phase, this new version does not have a huge number of new features compared to Firefox 4.0, and this is mainly due to the fact that this is the first product of the new round of rapid development.
Here are the main novelties of Firefox 5.0:
- Added support for CSS animations
- Best performance: Canvas, JavaScript, memory consumption and network
- Better support for HTML5 technologies, XHR, MathML, SMIL and canvas
- Enhanced spell checking for certain languages
- Better integration of Firefox into the desktop environment on Linux distributions
Note also that a large number of different problems have been erased from Firefox 4.0.1 via the correction of over 1400 bugs in all areas.
Note that since the Release Candidate of choice in the channel about the browser was deleted. Mozilla had said on that occasion that it does not really match the actual use of testers, who preferred in all cases have separate facilities: Nightly, Aurora and Beta / Final.
Keep in mind that the new round of development of Firefox 5 directly affects the rate of release of new products and the amount of them in each version. Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, we had thus said the new rate "does not change the ability to produce the Mozilla code. We can not expect the same number of new versions between 3.6 and 4.0, separated by 15 months of development, and version 5.0 beta which comes six weeks after the 4.0. If it comes out four releases per year, we can say that each will be four times less spectacular. "
